About us

Growing Mission Focused Churches in Europe

What is GLO Europe?

Our strap-line says it all “Growing Mission Focused Churches in Europe”.

We exist to grow mission focused churches by mobilising, training and resourcing Christians to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout Europe. As a key part of this process we endeavour to work with existing churches and help to establish new church-planting churches using a team ethos and in partnership with national structures that share our ecclesiology and ethos.

Our Beliefs

We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and that he is both fully God and fully man. He died to take the punishment for our sins and his sacrifice makes it possible for us to enter into a loving relationship with God as our father. We believe that Jesus was physically raised from the dead and has ascended into heaven where he now reigns and cares for us. One day Jesus will return to the earth and bring history to a close by establishing his eternal kingdom.

We believe that the Holy Spirit gives life to every Christian and indwells them from the moment of their conversion. He empowers them so they can experience a personal transformation and begin to live holy lives. The Holy Spirit also equips every Christian for service by giving them spiritual gifts. It is the responsibility of every Christian to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit.

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and that it has the power to educate, challenge and transform us as we read it.

We believe in one God who eternally exists in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe that man was created sinless but through temptation by Satan fell and became sinful. The whole human race is under the condemnation of God and separated from him. Eternal salvation is freely offered to everyone and can be obtained through repentance and faith in the finished work of Christ. We believe that Justification is by grace alone.

We believe that all true Christians are members of the Body of Christ. Each local church should be self governing and we believe in a plurality of leadership. There are two ordinances or sacraments of the church; these are baptism by immersion which follows a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, and communion or the Lord’s Supper.

GLO Strategy for Europe in 4 words

EVANGELISE

We want to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ using every appropriate method.

Mission Trips

Mission trips are a key component in our evangelism. Sometimes our teams will be working with long term GLO missionaries and sometimes with church leaders or other missionaries with whom we have a good relationship.

TRAIN

We want to train anyone who wants their lives to count for the kingdom of God.

Training is mission

Our desire is not just to train people for the work of GLO, but rather to prepare all kinds of people to serve God in whatever situation he places them in. The Church in central and eastern Europe has a significant need for training and we are partnering with them and with other organisations to provide this.

ESTABLISH

We want to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ using every appropriate method.

GLO resident teams

A resident team comprises of workers who are willing to give longer period of time, usually several years, to work in a particular area. This is especially important in a cross-cultural context where extra time is needed for language learning and cultural assimilation.

RESOURCING

We want to do what us needed to encourage and affirm people involved in ministry.

We want to equip you

GLO can offer practical help to churches and Christian organisations. Some of our GLO workers commit time to advising and mentoring church leaders and other practitioners. We also have developed skill in communication and film making and we want to share this resource with others.

Our History

GLO began in Australia in 1965 primarily through the ministry of Colin Tilsley. Colin’s vision was to mobilise Christians to be involved in both long term and short term mission teams. The first short term team was to Madras, India. Longer term teams were established in France and Italy in the 1970s. Colin didn’t live long enough to see his vision fully mature because he developed Motor Neurone Disease and died at the age of 46. Before his death, however, Colin was able to share his vision with others and the work of GLO became established in New Zealand and Europe.

The base for GLO Europe was established in Motherwell, Scotland in 1974. Today GLO Europe has over 50 full-time workers across Europe.

From the beginning, the work of GLO Europe included the organising of short term mission teams and the establishing of a Bible Training Centre (now called Tilsley College). These ministries were complemented and supported by GLO Business Ministries which initially involved a Bookshop and Coffee Shop in Motherwell as well as a wholesale book ministry in Scotland, operated on behalf of STL (Send the Light Ministries). Funds from these ministries have been used to support the work of mission in Europe ever since.
