Summer Sale

July 2016

Dear Friend,

We would like to say a big THANK YOU for the excellent support given to our GLO staff, family & friends expedition up Ben Nevis to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Despite typical Scottish summer weather (rain, wind, cloud and even hail!), the team managed the ascent successfully, and over £2,000 has now been raised for Cancer Research. If you would like to add to this great total, you can still donate at The GLO Bookshop or GLO Coffee Shop, or you can use the 'Just Giving' website - click HERE!

Summer also wouldn't be summer without a GLO Bookshop Sale! We've got a huge range of reductions instore, from books to music to children's books, most items down to half original price, with many items to clear at VERY silly prices...... We've also had a great response to our children's 'Colour a Sea Creature' feature, with a veritable shoal of sharks, crabs, whales and octopusses (octopii?) adorning the children's section. Along with the 'Kings & Queens' kids quiz (prize book to be won!), there is plenty to keep the kids occupied at the GLO Bookshop during the long, rainy days of the Glasgow Fair - we look forward to seeing you!

Books for LifeWe're delighted to be joining in with a great new initiative from Krish Kandiah. Many of you will be aware of this dynamic Christian leader through his work for Tear Fund and 'Home for Good'- plus many other ministries! I'm not sure how he found the time(!), but he has started another initiative encouraging people to read books - 'Books for Life'. Each month, a Christian leader will reflect briefly on 3 books that have changed their life, and Krish will recommend 3 recent books to watch out for. We'll be supporting this in our advertising, and with special prices on the featured titles*. As a taster for this, you can see the first video from Canon J. John HERE.

With our grateful thanks for your interest and support,

Andrew

*Some featured books may be available only as an eBook or download, and we are unable to supply these. However, we will always direct you to the best deal.

NLT Inspire BiblesFeatured titles - NLT Inspire Bible - Aquamarine Hardback

One of our biggest selling lines of this year has been various colouring & journaling books, and we now have a lovely Bible to add to the range! The NLT Inspire Bible is a single-column, wide-margin New Living Translation Bible that will be greatly enjoyed as a resource for coloring and creative art journaling.

It is the first Bible of its kind with over 400 beautiful line-art illustrations spread throughout the Bible. Full-page and partial-page Scripture art is attractively displayed throughout the Bible, and the illustrations can be coloured in to make each Bible unique, colourful, and customizable. Every page of Scripture has two-inch-wide margins, with either Scripture lineart or ruled space for writing notes and reflections, or to draw and create. The generous 8.65 font ensures optimal readability, and quality cream Bible paper is great for creative art journaling.

ICB Children's BibleFeatured titles - International Children's Bible - Hardback

The International Children's Bible is not an adult Bible re-packaged for children. It has been translated directly from the original texts into English that can be read and understood by children aged between 6 and 12.This anglicised edition is illustrated throughout, and other features include a dictionary and colourful maps. I love the 'dedicatory prayer' that the original publishers (Thomas Nelson) shared -

"It is with great humility and prayerfulness that this Bible is presented to God’s children, young and old. We acknowledge the infallibility of God’s Word and our own human frailty. We pray that God has worked through us as his vessels so that his people might learn his truth for themselves and that it might richly grow in their lives. It is to his glory that this Bible is given."

But Is It True?Featured title - 'But Is It True?' PB - Michael Ots

As the summer wears on, many students will be thinking about moving on from school to college or university. Here's a great book to help confirm Christians in their faith, and challenge all to face the facts of the Faith. Here's what our General Director, Stephen McQuoid had to say about it!

"These days there are lots of popular works on apologetics which a new book like this will have to compete with. There is nothing here that is particularly ground-breaking as Ots answers questions such as, ‘Couldn’t faith just be a psychological crutch?’ and, ‘Isn’t Jesus just another myth?’ or even, ‘Hasn’t the Bible been changed?’.

So why should you buy it? First, Ots is a good writer, so the book is accessible and pitched at an undergraduate level. Secondly, he is good at dealing with both academia and popular culture which shows in this book. Thirdly, each chapter ends with a list of books to read, and he helpfully categorises these as ‘mild’, ‘medium’ and ‘hot’ in terms of how technical they are. I found myself wanting to add to his lists, but they are still very useful. All in all, this is a helpful apologetics work which readers will benefit from if they have not done a significant amount of apologetics reading already. If you know a young Christian at university, this book might be just what they need and this is exactly the market that Ots has aimed for."
