February 2018
Dear Friend,
I was delighted to hear The GLO Centre featured on national radio several nights ago! 'Whispering Bob' Harris has a country music show on Radio 2 on Thursday evenings- I confess to being a regular listener as I drive home from the GLO Bookshop late night opening..... So it was great to hear him feature a track from Philippa Hanna's new CD 'Come Back Fighting' on his show. And also grateful that he gave her concert in the GLO Centre on Tuesday 6th February a mention! Further details of the concert are below - tickets are going well, but plenty of space for more folk to come. We hope you can make it.
Despite the wintry weather, it's lovely to see snowdrops pushing through the grass and other spring bulbs starting to show signs of life around the Centre- a sign of warmer days to come. Looking forward to Spring, we have our new 'Take Note' promotion running. This has many offers on a range of new books and relevant Lent & Easter titles. Click on the image to be taken to the Take Note page on our website, or ask us to post you a leaflet out. In addition to these offers, we have a great range of Easter cards and gifts coming in, along with a wide selection of books to read in preparation for the excitement of Easter. The Easter-themed feature items in this newsletter have been picked by our staff & volunteers, and I'm grateful to them for their recommendations.
And, of course, we still have our Winter Sale running- we'll be doing some final clearance reductions over the next few days, so, if you are able to call into the shop, you will be sure to pick up a bargain or two.
With our grateful thanks for your interest and support,
Andrew

Featured Bible Study- Cover to Cover Lent series - Fleeting Shadows
This study from the popular Cover to Cover series is subtitled ' How Christ Transforms the Darkess'. Join author Malcolm Duncan as he draws from his own personal life and experience to help us reflect on the cross and the power of Christ in our own lives as we walk through the trials and tribulations of life.
Our new member of staff, Richard, writes - "I have chosen this 6 week group study booklet this year for my own church homegroup, from the many Lenten-themed studies available in The GLO Bookshop. Each week of this study has a topical study based on verses from the 23rd Psalm and John’s gospel, with discussion questions that should open up wider sharing. Overall themes are God as Shepherd and the One who turns situations of darkness into light- giving scope for much encouragement!"

Each year, Bible Reading Fellowship publish a Lent book suitable for personal reflection. This recent title from Amy Boucher Pye explores God's gift for forgiveness and new life. Daily reflections and prayers help us to experience the living power of the cross of Christ through biblical and modern-day stories of wrongdoing and forgiveness.
Richard comments- "If you are looking for individual daily reflections for Lent I’d suggest this 2016 BRF Lent Book which has glowing recommendations from R T Kendall and Jennifer Rees Larcombe. She says it’s the best Lent book she has ever read! Its overall theme is forgiveness and remaining healthy as a child of God, and I’m looking forward to reading more…"

Just published!- 'Why People Hate God & What to Do About It' PB
Our General Director, Stephen McQuoid, writes and speaks extensively on contemporary issues, so we're delighted to receive his latest book. Stephen writes in a very accessible & understandable style, so his latest book will be of great benefit to many.
How should Christians respond to the criticism of God that is now commonplace? God is an unpopular figure at best and a monster at worst. Most people do not know the God of the Bible. What they know is the misrepresentation of God that is peddled within popular culture and by some academics.
This misrepresentation is spiced up by the secularists and atheists who wish to malign Gods good name so that He is distrusted and reviled in the public arena and then banished to the margins where He can do little damage. Such activity should be seen for what it is: a quest for autonomy. A bid to live life with no reference to God, a life where human reason decides what is right and wrong, what is true and where God will always be unwelcome.
Ultimately the answer is that we should tell the truth about God and should reject every false caricature, every slight and every lie about God. Only by doing this will people in our culture be brought to the foot of the cross and be led to the Saviour.

Featured media product- 'Risen' DVD
'Risen' is the story of the resurrection told through the eyes of a non-believing Roman soldier, tasked with disproving the notion that Jesus could rise from the dead. I really enjoyed this film, as it gives a fascinating depiction of the background to Scripture. It does have a '12' certificate, which I think is right, as there are some 'true to life' depictions of the turmoil of 1st century Palestine. The film gives plenty of food for thought, and GLO Bookshop volunteer Joy says that the last scene of this film has revolutionised the way she sees Jesus’ healing ministry.
This DVD was overall winner at the CRT Awards for 'Best Feature Film DVD' in 2017.
